How to open a P7M attachment from PEC or email

Received a .p7m attachment that your PDF reader will not open? Save it on your device and open the signed envelope in your browser without renaming it.

From email to document in three steps

A P7M is a CAdES envelope. It may contain a PDF, an XML invoice or another document format. Changing its extension to .pdf does not open the envelope.

  1. Save the .p7m attachment from your PEC mailbox or email to your computer or phone.
  2. Open the homepage viewer and choose the file or drag it into the box. The limit is 50 MB.
  3. Read the contents and choose “Download original”. For a FatturaPA invoice you can also export a PDF reading copy.

On Windows and Mac

Use an up-to-date browser and choose the saved attachment. You do not need to install signing software to read formats supported by this viewer.

For PDF contents, read every page, zoom and download the original for free. Another format may need a suitable application after downloading.

On iPhone, iPad and Android

First save the attachment in Files or Downloads. Open this website in your browser, tap the file selection button and find the saved attachment.

This website is not a native app and does not automatically integrate with every email app. If the file picker cannot find the attachment, check that it is downloaded on the device rather than only previewed in your mailbox.

What you download from the P7M

“Download original” returns the document inside the envelope. A PDF is not recreated; an XML invoice remains the original structured file.

Keep the received P7M too. An extracted document or generated invoice PDF does not include the signature information in the CAdES envelope.

If opening fails

An incomplete attachment, detached signature without a document or protected PDF may need different next steps. Read the viewer’s error and consult the troubleshooting guide. Do not modify the signed envelope to try to make it readable.
